FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Below are some answers to the most common questions we receive about the Burlington Police Department, the hiring process and operations.

  • What qualifications do I need to be a police officer?

To become a police officer at BPD you need at least a high school diploma or equivalent, and be 21 years of age by the time of hire.

  • Can you tell me about the Vermont Police Academy?

The Vermont Police Academy (VPA) is located in Pittsford, VT. The VPA is para-military, therefore it is a combination of police discipline and academics. It is a live-in academy so you will reside on-site for the week and go home for the weekends. The VPA holds two (2) classes a year: February and August, each class is seventeen (17) weeks long.

  • When is the next police academy?

The next academy is February 3, 2025. However, paperwork needs to be submitted by December 6, 2024. Therefore, we encourage you to apply sooner rather than later.

  • Is there a deadline to submit my application?

No, BPD does not have an application deadline, however BPD follows VPA schedule. We are always hiring for the February and August academy.

  • Does BPD have a written exam?

No, currently the state of Vermont is working on creating a new written exam.

  • Can I apply if I have consumed and/or smoked cannabis (marijuana)?

You must be marijuana free for one (1) plus years and a period of three (3) years for any other illegal drugs at the time of submitting your application.

  • Does BPD hire non-citizens?

Yes, non U.S. citizens can apply. You will be required to show proof for the ability to live and work in the U.S. permanently (i.e.: residence or work authorization card/green card). You must have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Vermont State driver's license.

  • Are police officers allowed to have tattoos, facial hair and piercings?

Yes, officers at BPD are allowed to tattoos, but they cannot be considered profane, obscene, or offensive. Facial hair is allowed but must be neat and trimmed, exemptions may include a medical reason or religious commitment. Piercing are acceptable as long as earrings are not dangling or dangerous (i.e. those that can be grabbed and/or yanked).

  • What is your lateral hiring process?

To qualify for a level III waiver an applicant must have 3-years of law enforcement experience. You must submit all of your training records and certifications to BPD during the hiring process. When hired, you will attend a two (2) week, part-time academy at Vermont Police Academy and complete field training at BPD.
